Impaction Criteria (Catalog Year 2014 and Later)

All students who declare Liberal Studies as their major begin as pre-majors. Once pre-major requirements are completed, students need to move from the pre-major to the major.

The criteria that students must meet to move from the pre-major to the major are listed below:

  • Complete 60 units, including all courses in preparation for the major.
  • Earn a passing score on the Liberal Studies Mathematics Proficiency Assessment.
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 2.70 or higher.
  • Complete with a grade of “C” or higher: a certified Area A1 Oral Communication course, a certified Area A3 Intermediate Composition and Critical Thinking course, Exercise and Nutritional Sciences 241A and 241B, and Mathematics 210 and 211.  These courses cannot be taken Credit/No Credit (Cr/NC).

When you have met all of these requirements, you should email the Liberal Studies advisors so the major will be declared. This will not happen automatically.

Much of the upper division major coursework is not open to pre-majors. Footnotes in the class schedule always indicate if a class is not open to pre-majors.
