After attending an orientation, students should make an appointment to see a Liberal Studies adviser to set up an advising file. The file will be kept in the Liberal Studies office and used to track the student’s progress through the major.

Students should bring any relevant materials to the appointment. This includes transcripts (unofficial is fine) from  other institutions. If classes are not articulated equivalents of SDSU classes, then also bring class descriptions from the previous institution. (To determine if a class from a California community college is equivalent to an SDSU class, check the assist wesbite)

Walk-in Advising

After the initial advising appointment, students no longer need to make anappointment to see an adviser. All subsequent face-to-face advising is done on a walk-in basis.

Walk-in advising is on a first come, first served basis. There can be significant wait times during busy periods (when class schedules are announced, the first week of the semester, etc.). Students who plan ahead and come in for walk-in advising during off-peak periods rarely have to wait to see an adviser.

Consult the Liberal Studies home page for the current walk-in advising schedule.

Email Advising

Students with advising files already set up can also use e-mail advising by emailing the program at (include your Red ID #). Emails are generally answered  Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
