The upper division core coursework is the same for all students in the 2011-2013 catalogs and consists of 22 units. This coursework covers a variety of content areas, including Language Arts, History, Math and Science.

Focus Coursework: All Liberal Studies students in the 2011-2013 catalogs will choose a focus - either Literacy, Math or Science. The number of focus units ranges from 23 units in the Literacy Focus to 35 in both the Math Focus and the Science Focus.

Students in each focus complete coursework that can be applied to an Introductory Subject Matter Authorization to teach that focus' content in middle school, provided they also earn a multiple subjects credential (grade minimums apply).

See Pathways to Teaching and Course Timing for issues to consider when choosing a focus.
