Registration Updates

important update iconThe Spring 2010 schedule is now on-line. Please realize that some of the classes you wished for previously have been canceled or moved to new times. Unfortunately, this is unavoidable in this very dificult time for the University. Revised charts showing the times of courses that satisfy requirements are now available:

* Courses for freshmen and sophomores
* Courses for juniors and seniors (both pre-majors and majors)

These charts include important hints about sections that pair with each other, how difficult it may be to obtain a seat, and when afternoon sections may or may not be available. Please use them to arrange your class schedule.

Changes in the Resgistration Rules

The university has implemented a new registration rule since the beginning of the registration period. As far as we know, this rule isn't in writing anywhere, so we're providing the information here:

COURSE REPEAT CAP: Effective beginning Fall 2009, students will not be able to enroll in a class for a third (or more) time except by special permission of the university. Most immediately, you will not be able to register for a class a third (or more) time during the initial registration period (the system will block you). Students who need to enroll in a class for a third (or more) time will have to crash classes and get add codes once the semester has begun and then petition to enroll in that class.

Once students obtain an add code, they will need to come to the LS office to complete a petition form. The exact process has not yet been determined, but keep checking back for updates. Please also note that approval of your petition is not automatic - if the university denies your petition, you won't be able to register in that class. Bottom line: if you need to repeat a class, make sure you pass it the second time, or you might be out of luck.

Also, please note that, per the SDSU catalog, students may repeat up to a maximum of 28 units, of which only 16 can be repeated for course forgiveness, with only one forgiven course at the upper dvision level.

For more on registration rule changes that affect students see the Advising Office's website.

TE 170/CFD 170

Neither of these classes is being offered in the Spring. HOWEVER, there will be a large section offered in the Fall, so look for it then.

HHS 280/ TE 296

HHS 280 will not be offered this semester, BUT a substitute class - TE 296 - will be. If you complete TE 296, you will satisfy the DHP-2 requirement and not have to take HHS 280. HOWEVER, there has been a delay in getting TE 296 posted to the class schedule for the Spring semester. Be patient - it will show up eventually.

HIST 413

Though the footnote in the schedule states that this class has a WPA prerequisite, the instructor assures us that he will not enforce it, so no one needs to worry about that.

N SCI 412

Footnote #3 in the schedule doesn't provide the information it should, namely the following:

"presented in blended format. for the 1 unit activity portion, students will view and analyze videos of both phenomena and of students discussing science ideas. reliable access to a multimedia computer with a high-speed (cable modem, dsl) internet connection either at home or at sdsu is required."

Specialization updates:

* For the Theatre specialization, both Theatre 465 and Theatre 460B are being offered this Spring. If you need these classes, get them now while you still can.
* For the Math specialization, Math 413 is being offered this Spring, after not being offered in the Fall. Get it while you can if you need it.
* For the PE specialization, ENS 398 is unlikely to ever be offered again. Therefore, it will be waived for students in the PE specialization (unless they've already taken it). ALSO, the ENS department isn't offering ENS 348 this semester but is expected to offer it in the Fall. Any student graduating in May or August 2010 who still needs this class should contact the Liberal Studies program via the "email advising" link on this page (upper left) or come in for walk-in advising.

Message from the provost:

As is the case with every institution funded by the State of California, San Diego State University is experiencing severe budget reductions. How, or even when, the State will finally adopt a budget remains unknown. But we do know about some of the budget cuts and these are already reflected in the Fall class schedule.

As you will notice when you review the schedule, there are fewer sections of classes being offered and classes may not be offered every semester. This makes it more critical than ever that you carefully select your classes. Although a class that you need may not be at your preferred time or with your preferred faculty member, it is especially important that you pay careful attention to your advising sheet and degree evaluation through the web portal to make optimal progress toward graduation by registering for the appropriate classes. If you do not, your academic progress could be significantly impeded. For example, if a required class is offered in the Fall but not in the Spring, you may have to wait an entire year if you do not take the class this semester. Also, familiarize yourself with new university policies that have been adopted in an effort to allow all students to obtain their needed classes http://arweb.sdsu.edu/es/advising/courseforgive.html

If you have any questions about which classes you should register for, please see your academic advisor. Throughout this budget crisis we have worked to assure that students will have access to needed classes, and we will continue to do so.

Course names and numbers: Some course names and/or numbers have changed since advising sheets and catalogs were published. Additionally, in some cases, requried classes have been replaced by other classes since advising sheets and catalogs were published. These changes are listed below. Your degree evaluation, which is available to you through the web portal, will reflect these changes as well.

Old requirement: GEN S 130
New requirement: TE 170 or CFD 170 – these are the same course as GEN S 130 but with a new name and number

Old requirement: CFD 371 or SLHS 322
New requirement: CFD 375B (or PSYCH 380) – these are different courses with different content

Old requirement: CFD 375A
