Although the Liberal Studies Office is not the best place to receive credential program advising, we have put together the following information to help Liberal Studies students plan their undergraduate course work in preparation for entrance into a credential program at SDSU. Please note the following important points:

• The official advising office for SDSU credential program issues is the
  SDSU College of Education Office of Advising and Outreach, BA 259. Information can also be found on the web at http://coe.sdsu.edu/ceac/.
• The information provided here was taken from SDSU College of Education catalog information as of Spring 2011 , and is subject to change.
• Credential program prerequisites at different schools are likely to be very different – consult a website or counselor affiliated with the school of your choice for more information about that school’s prerequisites. This information applies only SDSU.
• Prerequisites assume that students have completed Liberal Studies requirements for 2003-2004 catalogs or later. Students in earlier catalog years will need a health education class.

MULTIPLE SUBJECTS, REGULAR EDUCATION

Program: multiple subject credential (regular education)
Department: Teacher Education, BA-255 http://coe.sdsu.edu/ste/
Prerequisites not included in the Liberal Studies major (5 units):

• ED 451 (3 units)
• SPED 450 (2 units) (students in the Human Development specialization should check with Teacher Education to see if SPED 500* can substitute)

*This class can also be applied towards the Human Development specialization for students in catalog years 2010 and prior.

SPECIAL EDUCATION

Program: special education

Prerequisites not included in the Liberal Studies major (16 units):          

• SPED 500** (3 units)
• SPED 501** (3 units)
• SPED 502** (1 unit)
• SPED 524** or 525* or 528, depending on emphasis – see SPED Department (3 units)
• SPED 527 (3 units)
• PLC 915C (3 units)

**These classes can also be applied towards the Human Development specialization for students in catalog years 2010 and prior.

BILINGUAL EDUCATION

Program: multiple subjects credential with bilingual authorization

Prerequisites not included in the Liberal Studies major (12 units):        

• PLC 415 (3 units) *** ^ + #
• PLC 515 (3 units)
• ED 451 (3 units)
• SPED 500 (3 units) [SPED 450 can substitute if already taken]

***This class is only for students interested in English/Spanish bilingual certification; students interested in English/Arabic, English/Japanese, English/Mandarin or English/Tagalog certification must take a test, instead.
^This class can be applied to the Bilingual Ed Credential Option (#2) in the Literacy Focus for students in catalog years 2011 and later.
+This class can be applied to the Spanish specialization for students in catalog years 2010 and prior.
